Biscuits

Developing. Based on Tyler Florence's recipe

Ingredients

  • 2 cups all-purpose flour
  • ½ cup vegetable shortening, chilled, cut into 1/2-inch pieces
  • ¾ cup buttermilk
  • 1 tablespoon sugar
  • 1 teaspoon salt
  • 2 teaspoons baking powder
  • ½ teaspoon baking soda

Directions

  1. Pre-heat oven to 400°F.
  2. In a large mixing bowl, add dry ingredients and whisk together to combine.
  3. Cut in shortening with a pastry blender until mixture resembles coarse crumbs.
  4. Make a well in the center and add buttermilk.
  5. Mix dry ingredients into buttermilk with your hands until it forms a sticky dough.
  6. Turn dough out onto floured surface. Fold the dough over itself 3–4 times.
  7. Roll dough out ¾-inch thick.
  8. Cut with a 3-inch biscuit cutter. Gather scraps and repeat.
  9. Transfer dough rounds to a sheet pan lined with parchment.
  10. Make a dimple in the center of each biscuit.
  11. Brush with melted butter.
  12. Bake for 15 minutes until golden brown.
